Lake Formarinsee

At the end of the valley Zugertal, in the heart of the Lechquellen mountains, lies the lake Formarinsee at 1.793 meters above the sea level. The mountain lake is fed by a natural spring and builds itself annually new from the snowmelt. That is why his size varies. Normally the lake is about 500 meters long and 400 meters wide with a maximum depth of 17 meters.

His name „Formarin“ comes from an old German field name for the surrounding alpland. Until today the area is used for alpine farming.

Lake Formarinsee is so special because it has no superficial runoff, but drains over a karst cave system. A part of the water flows into the river Lech and then into the Danube. The other part arrives after six to seven days at the creek Marulbach and flows through underground systems into the river Rhein.

Geographically seen, the lake is situated in the municipal area of Dalaas and is accessible on foot from the valleys Klostertal, Großes Walsertal and from Lech-Zürs. One who likes it more comfortable, takes the bus to the valley Zugertal directly to the lake Formarinsee.
