With quiet Steps through the glittering Winter World

Snowshoe Hike from Raggal to Ludescherberg

Monika Bischof

"I'm off to enjoy the winter!" Head and hands wrapped up warmly, a last checking look at my snowshoes and off I go - into the white glittering winter landscape of the Biosphere Reserve Großes Walsertal. The starting point for today's hike is the church of Raggal, where I can park my car at the municipal office.

In a slight ascent, the tour at first leads me along a small road to Rapiert to the Gafiduralift. The fresh, snow-scented winter air fills my lungs. Then I leave the small but fine ski resort of Raggal behind me and dive into the quiet winter landscape ahead on the groomed winter hiking trail in the direction of Falazera/Ludescherberg. There is majestic silence and I let my gaze wander over this white expanse. Passing snow-covered groups of trees and hay barns, I walk in very gentle ups and downs to Ludescherberg, where the enchanting winter panorama of the surrounding mountains down into Walgau opens up to me.

I take a short break and let the winter world take effect on me. After a little refreshment with hot mountain herbal tea and homemade cookies, I return along the same route. A bit tired, but happy and satisfied, I arrive back at the church in Raggal.

My Tip:
Snowshoes are recommended for the tour, especially when there is fresh snow. This way you can make your own tracks at one or the other place, even on short stretches. Attention: if you leave the prepared winter hiking trail, you are in the open unsecured terrain. Here you need knowledge and experience - because route choice, snow and avalanche situation have to be assessed on your own responsibility. If you don't have snowshoes, you'd better stay on the groomed winter hiking trail. As soon as the snow has settled and consolidated, it's like walking on a carpet of snow.
