Tips for Safe Encounters with grazing Animals

So that the moo always remains friendly

Just like humans cattle, sheep, goats and horses like to be outdoors. This is in their nature. The farmers in our region make it possible for the farm animals to live out this instinct and lead a species-appropriate life on pastures and in the alps. And just like humans, animals defend themselves when they see themselves or their young in danger. In order to avoid misunderstandings between humans and herd animals there are some rules for the right behaviour.

Important rules of conduct

  • Avoid contact with grazing livestock, do not feed animals, keep a safe distance!
  • Keep calm, don't frighten grazing cattle!
  • Mother cows protect their calves. Avoid encounters between suckler cows and dogs!
  • Always keep dogs under control and keep them on a short leash. If an attack by a grazing animal is foreseeable: Unleash immediately!
  • Do not leave hiking trails on alpine pastures and pastures!
  • When grazing cattle blocks the way, handle with the greatest possible distance!
  • When approaching grazing livestock: stay calm, do not turn your back, avoid the animals!
  • Leave the pasture as quickly as possible at the first sign of unrest among the animals!
  • Fences must be observed! If there is a gate use it, close it well and cross the pasture quickly!
  • Meet the people working here, the nature and the animals with respect!
