The two-hour journey from Vorarlberg over the German Queralpenstraße and through the Ostallgäu lake district to Füssen is an experience in itself. King Ludwig II.'s two world-famous Bavarian royal castles Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau can already be seen from far off. The ostentatious  Byzantine throne room, the romantic grotto, and the medieval Singers' Hall are worth a visit. Neuschwanstein castle can only be visited on a guided tour.
